The winner of six Oscars, this delightful musical stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as Hollywood hopefuls.

Writer-director Damien Chazelle's follow-up to his sizzling drama Whiplash is a dazzling homage to the golden age of musicals - with more than a touch of Jacques Demy's 1960s French New Wave musicals The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort thrown in for good measure.

Opening with a bravura sequence in which a traffic jam on an LA flyover turns into a stunningly choreographed dance routine, the movie goes on to explore the bittersweet love story of Stone¿s aspiring actress and purist jazz pianist Gosling, who fleetingly encounter each other as drivers caught in the jam.

With the stars in utterly beguiling form, Chazelle's film is a joyous, uplifting experience.

The Oscars went to Stone, Chazelle, production design, the music and original song and it was nominated for a further eight awards, including Best Film - missing out to Moonlight.
