The setting is a post-apocalyptic near future in which a family fights for survival in a world that has been overrun by sightless monsters that hunt by sound.

The slightest noise will set them off, which creates moments of fist-biting suspense as parents Blunt and Krasinski and their children (Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe and Cade Woodward) try to evade the giant insect-like creatures (all ears and teeth) besetting their secluded farm in upstate New York.

The family goes about barefoot and uses sign language - Simmonds is deaf - which gives them an edge. But the most ordinary of mishaps - such as an exposed nail - can lead to disaster, as Krasinski shows in one unbearably taut, agonisingly prolonged sequence, the tension winding tighter and tighter until we're ready to scream, even if the characters must not.
