Ralph causes all sorts of mayhem when he ventures into the internet in this fun-packed sequel. 4/5 stars

The Oscar-nominated 2012 original introduced us to video-game bad guy Wreck-It Ralph (voiced by John C Reilly) who is really a softy at heart.

In Disney’s highly enjoyable second adventure Ralph and best friend Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) leave their arcade home in search of a spare steering wheel to fix Vanellope's obsolete cart-racing game, Sugar Rush.

Their quest takes them into the baffling realm of the internet, where Vanellope discovers the delights of an edgy online auto-racing game called Slaughter Race and seeks to emulate the feats of its sassy star driver, Shank (Gal Gadot).

Meanwhile, fearing for the future of their friendship, the jealous Ralph allows himself to be manipulated by some of the web's more unscrupulous denizens, including Yesss (Taraji P Henson), head algorithm of video site BuzzTube and shifty Pop-Up Ad hawker JP Spamley (Bill Hader).

Their ensuing adventures are stuffed to bursting with whizz-bang thrills, dazzling visuals and reams of pop-culture in-jokes (look out for the Disney Princesses), as well as some touching insights into the nature of friendship.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
