Newly relocated from the Midwest to a stinky rich beach town in California, teen twins Maika Monroe and Cody Fern take refuge in surfing.

But divided loyalties as their well-heeled parents' marriage falls apart and the lure of drugs begin to take their toll on the siblings' bond.

Based on Joy Nicholson's 1997 novel, this coming-of-age drama is languid and dreamy, until things turn nightmarish.

Monroe's sometimes overly poetic voiceover betrays the film's literary origins, but the atmospheric photography and solid acting make this worth seeing - not least for the unexpected sight of Jennifer Garner throwing some memorable wobblies as the twins' furiously neurotic mother.
