As their home was the last major land mass to be colonised, the creatures of New Zealand evolved like nothing else on the planet.
This new one-off documentary, Wild New Zealand: Lost Paradise, introduces some of the country’s dazzling array of fauna, which ranges from flightless birds, like the iconic kiwi, to huge longfin eels that migrate over 3,000 miles from freshwater rivers to the sea to mate and die somewhere deep in the Pacific Ocean.
We also meet the funny kakapo, a fat, ground-dwelling parrot that sings all night to attract a mate, and there’s some great footage of a few of the 13 species of penguin that call the Land of the Long White Cloud home.
