In 1942, a small Lancashire village is 'invaded' by American troops. They’ve been sent in to help the British war effort and their smart uniforms and easy-going smiles soon wow the ladies.

Richard Gere is the young GI who falls in love with engaged shopgirl Lisa Eichhorn and, in a parallel story, married mother-of-two Vanessa Redgrave gets romantically involved with American captain William Devane.

Director John Schlesinger shows a great affection for the time and place and a keen eye and ear for the right sights and sounds in this wonderfully evocative slice of nostalgia that convincingly portrays the gulf between the two cultures.

The stars all give believable performances, while Colin Welland's screenplay is all the more moving because of its restraint.
