Paul McGann joins Holby City in December as respected surgeon Professor John Gaskell. And it seems he's arrived at the right time, as Holby faces its greatest threat yet...

Here's the first pic of Paul McGann as Holby City's newest super-surgeon Professor John Gaskell.

Respected surgeon Gaskell is seen here alongside Holby favourites Ric Griffin (Hugh Quarshie), Jac Naylor (Rosie Marcel) and Henrik Hanssen (Guy Henry).

And if they all look terrified that’s because Gaskell’s arrival marks the start of a special two-part story, a dramatic trailer for which has just been released, where Holby faces the greatest threat the hospital has ever experienced. Could several much-loved Holby characters be in real danger?

"I’m enormously proud of the Holby cast, crew and our lead writer Andy Bayliss for this stunningly dramatic and moving two-part event," said Simon Harper, executive producer of Holby City and Casualty. "You'll see our NHS heroes instinctively rush towards the hospital's greatest peril yet in a story that changes lives forever – and the fact that the episodes introduce Paul, one of our country's most internationally renowned screen talents, is the icing on the cake."

Of his new role, Paul said: "I've never done a continuous drama before, so even with a bit of experience, for the first few weeks it was like starting school again. In these episodes we get to see how good John is in a crisis. The impact of what happens at the hospital is played out for months in the aftermath of these events."

Check out our full interview with Paul next week and his first two explosive episodes on Tuesday December 5 and Thursday December 7.
