Hollyoaks scoops mental health award
Emma Rigby has picked up a prestigious award honouring Hollyoaks' treatment of her character's struggle with eating disorders. This year's soap category in the Mental Health Media Awards went to the Channel 4 series for Emma's character Hannah Ashworth's battle with anorexia and bulimia. Emma, who also won Best Actress at the British Soap Awards this year, said: "This is fantastic recognition for a storyline I was very privileged to be part of. "There was a lot of research with Hannah's plight and I'm pleased that it's paid off. Hopefully we've shown through the storyline that people can recover," she added. The hard-hitting plot saw Hannah and her pal Melissa, played by Carla Chases, become obsessed with their weight, and climaxed with Melissa suffering a heart attack. Show producer Bryan Kirkwood added: "Hollyoaks' win at the Mental Health Awards rounds off another brilliant year for the show. "Emma's portrayal was raw and from the heart and she totally deserves this awards success." Get all the latest soap gossip delivered straight to your door. Subscribe to Soaplife magazine today
