In a dither over what to do with his gap year, Will Poulter's middle-class youngster gets taken up by a bunch of posh bohemians in Kids in Love, a laid-back coming-of-age-drama set in a very well-heeled, arty stratum of present-day London.
Not everyone will be charmed by the film's uncritical depiction of upper-crust privilege, with its casual use of vintage Rolls Royces and swanky homes in the country, but the ever-watchable Poulter holds things together, while Cara Delevingne (opens in new tab), perfectly at home in this milieu, adds her customary boho chic in a supporting role.
Certificate 15. Runtime 85 mins. Director Chris Foggin
Kids in Love is showing on Sky Cinema Premiere and is available on Blu-ray & DVD from Signature Entertainment.
A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
