The Trust Nicolas Cage

Devious Las Vegas cop Nicolas Cage ropes nervy colleague Elijah Wood into a larcenous scheme in The Trust, a slippery heist thriller from sibling directors Alex and Benjamin Brewer.

Putting his detective skills to crooked use, he has deduced that an out-of-the-way grocery store contains a secret vault in which some criminals have been stashing their ill-gotten gains. Can the duo break in and steal this mysterious cache?

Inevitably, there are twists, turns and ironic reversals before we learn the answer, and although the ending is a tad flat there's fun to be had along the way, not least from the way Cage adds kooky flourishes to the narrative. 'I have an idea,' he says when inspiration strikes, wiggling his fingers in the air with avid glee. 'It's kind of wacky.'

Certificate 15. Runtime 88 mins. Directors Alex Brewer, Benjamin Brewer

The Trust debuts today on Sky Cinema Premiere and is available on Blu-ray & DVD from Signature Entertainment.

Jason Best

A film critic for over 25 years, Jason admits the job can occasionally be glamorous – sitting on a film festival jury in Portugal; hanging out with Baz Luhrmann at the Chateau Marmont; chatting with Sigourney Weaver about The Archers – but he mostly spends his time in darkened rooms watching films. He’s also written theatre and opera reviews, two guide books on Rome, and competed in a race for Yachting World, whose great wheeze it was to send a seasick film critic to write about his time on the ocean waves. But Jason is happiest on dry land with a classic screwball comedy or Hitchcock thriller.
