Look out for EastEnders star Danny Dyer and Emmerdale's Danny Miller in a huge battle to be crowned King of Soaps as voting begins for the next National Television Awards today...
The biggest TV shows in Britain will be duking it out at the upcoming National Television Awards, hosted by Dermot O’Leary live on ITV on January 25, with voting for the nominations short list starting today.
Some of the most hotly anticipated awards of the evening will be the individual soap awards, which could see a battle between Danny Dyer and Danny Miller in the Serial Drama Performance category, which Danny Dyer won last time. Both are on the NTAs nominations list released today.
It's been another big year for Danny Dyer's EastEnders character - landlord of The Queen Vic, Mick Carter - who's battled to keep his family together after that shock kiss with Whitney, baby Ollie's accident, and troubles that have hit his son Lee. Meanwhile, Danny Miller has earned critical praise for his portrayal of Aaron Livesy in a storyline about childhood sexual abuse.
Miller beat Dyer earlier the Best Male Dramatic Performance category at the Soap Awards, so this will be a chance for the popular EastEnders star to get some revenge by winning back his National Television Award.
This time at the National Television Awards, there’s also a new Period Drama category that sees ITV’s Victoria take on BBC1’s Poldark. Will Aidan Turner's Ross Poldark get one over on Jenna Coleman's historical Queen?
Meanwhile it’s Len Goodman against Simon Cowell and Mary Berry in the TV Judge category. With this year's Great British Bake Off being Mary's final appearance on the much-loved show, she'll be hoping to go out with a bang, as will popular Bake Off hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins following the news that they won't join the hit show on Channel 4 next year.
Competition in the Best Drama category will be fiercer than ever, with Cold Feet returning to ITV after over a decade away to rave reviews. But BBC1's sweeping historical drama War and Peace and BBC1' Call The Midwife, will also be hoping to make the shortlist.
In the Best Drama Performance award, Poldark's Aidan Turner will be up against The Night Manager's Tom Hiddleston, in a battle of the battle of the hunks.
With hits such as Fleabag, The Night Manager, The Durrells, National Treasure and a host of others making impressive debuts this year, the golden age of British television has continued. Now these shows will be testing themselves against global hits such as Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.
National Treasure stars, Robbie Coltrane, who played a celebrity accused of sexual assault, and Julie Walters, are also likely to be nominated for individual awards after critically acclaimed performances in the Channel 4 drama.
