Denise Welch to star in new BBC2 transgender comedy Boy Meets Girl

Waterloo Road and Coronation Street actress Denise Welch is among the stars of BBC2’s groundbreaking new transgender comedy Boy Meets Girl.

Denise plays Pam, the mother of Leo (Misfits star Harry Hepple), a young lad who falls for a beguiling older woman Judy (Rebecca Root, pictured), who isn’t everything she seems.

Pam’s unhappy about the age gap, but Leo doesn’t care. As far as he’s concerned, he’s met The One and someone very special…

Kristian Smith, BBC Commissioning Editor, said: “Boy Meets Girl is a heart-warming romantic comedy that draws on the glorious differences that shape all of us. It's a brilliant thing to be able to support comedy that is not only funny, but can also promote affirming messages of humanity and acceptance. "

Other cast members includes Janine Duvitski (Jacqueline the swinger in Benidorm), Nigel Betts (Eddie Hope in Emmerdale), Lizzie Roper (Sam Lomax in Hollyoaks) and Jonny Dixon (Darryl Morton in Coronation Street).

Filming of Boy Meets Girl is currently underway and the series will be shown on BBC2 later this year.

TV Content Director on TV Times, What's On TV and TV & Satellite Week

I'm a huge fan of TV so I've found the perfect job, writing about telly shows and interviewing major television, film and sports stars for over 30 years. I'm currently the TV Content Director on What's On TV, TV Times, TV and Satellite Week magazines plus contribute to Whattowatch.com. I previously worked on Woman and Woman's Own in the 1990s. Outside of work I swim every morning, support Charlton Athletic football club and get nostalgic about TV shows Cagney & Lacey, I Claudius, Dallas, Tenko and I'm quite partial to a bit of Little House on The Prairie. I'm totally on top of everything good coming up too, and love newer shows such as The Day Of The Jackal, This is Us, Hacks and anything Dexter.
