Tom Jones has been a mentor on The Voice since its first series in 2012 and has hinted that the current series may be his last.

And it looks like Sir Tom will be replaced with another Sir because Elton John is the first choice among the show’s bosses.

An insider at The Voice told The Daily Mirror: “Producers at The Voice have been thrown into a spin and are now looking for his replacement. At the top of their wish list is Elton John and they think he would make a brilliant mentor.

“They realise it is going to be very tough getting him on board. He is one of the world’s most well paid stars and doesn’t have to do very much.

“But if he is keen, the BBC are prepared to do everything they can to get him on the show.”

Meanwhile, there’s someone else who wouldn’t mind settling into one of the famous red chairs. Tom Fletcher from McBusted reckons it would be just the thing to fill his time when he returns from touring with his band, which was created when Tom’s band McFly joined forced with Matt Willis and James Bourne from Busted.

Tom thinks his experience of rejection before hitting the big time would make him the perfect coach for The Voice.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Tom said: "I'd love to do something like The Voice. I'd take my responsibilities very seriously. We've all had rejection.

"My whole career was based on McFly being born from me not getting the original Busted audition."
