Mary Berry: 'Paul Hollywood tried to take me to a McDonald's!'

Mary Berry says she's no lover of fast food and her Great British Bake Off co-judge Paul Hollywood failed in his attempt to convert her to Big Macs.

The 78-year-old cook, who was recently named Oldie of the Year, is adamant that she prefers her own home-made burgers to McDonald's or KFCs' fare.

"I’ve never been to a KFC, but I took my children to McDonald's when they were young because that’s where they wanted to go. But Paul Hollywood tried to take me there straight after filming a Bake Off," says Mary.

"He drove in and said, ‘Bez, come on', but I was very much looking forward to my meal that night at the hotel and I said, ‘I’m not going to have one'. He did though, because he loves it. But I don't, I like my own beef or lamb burgers. They are so easy and quick to make, I don’t use the very top quality mince because it’s not fatty enough, I just use good beef with fat and a bit of parmesan or some red currant jelly  and spices and fresh herbs. So I like burgers, but I prefer to know where they come from."

Mary's new series Mary Berry Cooks is screening on Mondays on BBC2.
