Nancy's advice for this year's Bake Off contestants

Hurrah! It's that time of year that we have all been waiting for. The new series of BBC1's Great British Bake Off is almost upon us.

In an interview with BBC Good Food magazine,  last year's winner Nancy Birtwhistle has some useful advice to this year’s contestants.

She says that filming the show takes over your life so you need to think ahead especially when it comes to fitting in a visit to the hairdressers. So she advises them book their hair appointments in advance.

“If you’re there for the full 10 weeks,” she explains, “there’s virtually no time to do anything other than bake at home.”

She may have won the show in 2014, but Nancy also reveals that it was actually her second attempt to be on the show because she applied to take part three years ago and was among the final 50 applicants out of the thousands that applied.

“I decided to try again the following year, but this time without telling anyone. Only my husband, Tim, knew,” she said.

She went on to beat 12,000 entrants to win the show as 12.3 million viewers tuned in to watch her take the title.

Nancy also revealed how meeting the judges, Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, was referred to as the “royal visit” by the film crew.

“You’d see Mary and Paul come into the tent and watch them at a neighbouring bench before they came over to you.”
