There's heartbreak heading to Neighbours next week as Sonya Rebecchi gets the life-changing news that she has cancer...

Neighbours favourite Sonya Rebecchi is given the devastating news next week that not only does she have cancer, but it has spread throughout her entire body.

After collapsing in pain, Sonya is rushed to hospital, where everyone assumes she is under the weather following evil nanny Alice's recent poisoning.

Alice poisoned Sonya before Christmas and left her for dead on the side of the road

But when the doctors reveal that she needs to have an ultrasound, Sonya is left frustrated with all the waiting and ropes neighbour and good friend Dr Karl Kennedy in to give her some answers.

However she is in for a huge shock when the gynaecologist reveals that she has a cyst on her ovary, and because of its size they recommend that they remove it immediately.

Sonya receives devastating news next week

As Sonya tries to get her head around the fact that she might need a double hysterectomy, it soon turns out that she has got much bigger things to worry about when she has the operation and something far more sinister is discovered.

As Sonya recovers from her surgery, Toadie tries to downplay how nervous he is about what is happening. And he is clearly right to be concerned when a specialist arrives along with Karl to deliver some heartbreaking news.

Sonya and Toadie try to process the shock news...

Sonya and Toadie are horrified to hear that the cyst was cancerous, and not only is the cancer stage four, but it has spread to her entire body.

As Sonya, Toadie and Karl reel from the shock of what the specialist has told them, Sonya proves she is made of tough stuff and vows to fight the cancer and starts preparing for whatever treatment she might need.

Toadie is in awe of how positive Sonya is remaining, and promises to fight this latest battle along side her... but Karl is knocked for six at the news and fights to be kept on Sonya's medical team so that he is able to help the couple as best he can.

Sonya's future is looking bleak

But as Sonya contemplates her unpredictable future with daughter Nell, will she be able to stay positive as she prepares to fight the biggest battle of her life?

It was revealed last year that a main character would be departing Ramsay Street in 2019, and more recently it was hinted that Sonya's new storyline means she is the favourite Erinsborough resident who would be leaving.

But where will her departure leave Toadie and Nell?

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5
