Paul O'Grady: We're overwhelmed by puppies this Christmas

Paul O'Grady says this Christmas will be a special time at Battersea Dogs And Cats Home which is currently overwhelmed by puppies.

The TV presenter and dog lover is presenting a festive episode of Paul O'Grady: For The Love Of Dogs on Christmas Day on ITV.

He said: "This year, Battersea seems to have been overwhelmed by pups. We got a German Shepherd who had 12 puppies - they're like the 12 puppies of Christmas!"

Paul said that he was amazed at the commitment of the staff at the London-based animal shelter and promised they would be making Christmas Day special for the dogs.

"All the dogs have a Christmas dinner and all the staff are in, as it's open every day of the year, so it's business as usual. They're quite remarkable, the staff, they certainly don't do it for the money. They do it for the love, they're very committed," he said.

Of his own festive plans, Paul said he would be spending some quality time with his canine pals: "I'm going to cook the dinner and flop in bed and watch all the stuff off Sky Plus like American Horror Story and things like that.

"A couple of horror films, because I love horror films too, like The Conjuring, so that's what I'm going to be doing Christmas Day - in bed, with the dogs, watching the telly."

He admitted he wasn't a big fan of Christmas, saying: "Everyone seems to be going to parties except me. I'm a bit Grinchy but I like it on the day, I'm all right when I get there."

A new, full series of the programme will return in the New Year, which Paul said he was looking forward to: "It's not really a job, you're watching somebody playing."
