What’s on telly tonight? Here the TV Times team of expert reviewers highlight the best shows on Thursday 1st February

Death in Paradise, 9.00pm, BBC1

It’s festival time in Saint Marie, but we all know what’s going to happen, don’t we? That’s right – there’s a murder! The victim’s husband interrupts the team’s festivities after a disturbing voicemail rouses his suspicions. But Jack (Ardal O’Hanlon) isn’t as sympathetic as he usually would be – the husband’s behaviour just doesn’t seem right to him. And then there’s the mystery of the yellow butterfly found near the body… which should be in hibernation at that time of year. Where has it come from? Meanwhile, Jack worries when he has to take Harry the lizard to the vet, and Dwayne (Danny John-Jules) gets an exhausting taste of parenthood when Darlene’s niece comes to stay with him. Death Row 2018, 9.00pm, ITV

Death Row 2018

Five years on, Sir Trevor McDonald - who's spoken about his experiences - returns to Indiana State Prison to talk to lifers and death row inmates. He’s reacquainted with Ronald Sanford, who committed double murder aged 13, and introduced to William Gibson, a chilling serial killer who boasts, "I could just kill a person and go out to dinner." When Trevor arrives, the prison has been on lockdown, with the inmates confined to their cells because of a drug problem. And thanks to another drug problem – a lack of the lethal toxin to administer in the new "Death Chamber" – there have been no executions since his last visit. Rating: ****

Blue Peter, 5.30pm, CBBC

Fun, fanfares and feats of derring-do are on the menu in today’s 5,000th episode of Blue Peter. To celebrate this auspicious occasion, a brand-new ‘diamond’ Blue Peter badge is being launched, 55 years after the original. Famous faces will be recalling their memorable Blue Peter badge moments from over the years, while presenter Lindsey Russell will be channelling her inner John Noakes to scale the mast of HMS Belfast, a dizzying 100 feet above the River Thames.
