Prince George and Princess Charlotte would like to tune into this enchanting tale... hopefully Kate and William will let them!

Prince George and Princess Charlotte will likely be watching BBC1 animation Zog on Christmas Day - that’s because they’re both fans of the Julian Donaldson and Axel Scheffer story!

We can imagine the scene as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with children George, 5, Charlotte 3, and little Louis settle down to watch Zog, which is based on the book by Gruffalo creators, writer Julia and illustrator Axel.

Zog

Prince George and Princess Charlotte love the children's stories written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. Zog is the latest one to be adapted by the BBC

Asked if she had any famous fans, Julia replied “Prince William’s kids. It’s strange because they know us and yet they’re the famous ones…”

The hugely popular tale revolves around an accident-prone dragon, who gets himself into all kinds of scrapes whilst learning how to fly, roar, breathe fire and fight knights in his first four years at Dragon School. Each year he meets a kind young girl who mends his injuries… now it’s year five, though, and he has to capture a princess!

The all-star voice cast includes Tracey Ullman as schoolteacher Madame Dragon, Sir Lenny Henry as the narrator and Poldark’s Hugh Skinner as Zog.

Lenny Henry is thrilled to be in Zog as the narrator

Talking about where the inspiration for the story came from, Julia said: “My publisher said: ‘Can we do dragons next?’ I thought of the words ‘Madame Dragon’ and they had a nice sound, so I decided she could be a teacher. My husband, Malcolm, is a doctor, so I thought Princess Pearl could have medical ambitions.”

So Prince George and Princess Charlotte don’t forget to nag William and Kate to let you watch Zog at 4.50pm on BBC1 on Christmas Day.
