Former Coronation Street star Sacha Parkinson has opened up to Soaplife about her new role in the second series of eerie ITV crime drama Safe House, which continues on Thursday at 9.00pm.
Here Sacha Parkinson talks to Soaplife...
Soaplife: You’re starring in the new series of crime-thriller Safe House, Sacha…
Sacha Parkinson: “I am! I play a character called Dani, who has a very close relationship with her mother, Julie. But she really doesn’t like her mum’s boyfriend, John. Her mother’s been abducted in a nightmare crime and Dani’s forced to live in this confined environment in and around the safe house with people she doesn’t necessarily like or trust – especially John…”
S: It sounds tense…
SP: “With no contact to the outside world, it’s a really strained situation for her to be in. She’s still really young and she’s worried about what’s happened to her mum.”
S: What attracted you to the drama?
SP: “I really enjoyed the first series of Safe House. So when a role came up, it wasn’t even a question of whether I’d do it or not. I love thrillers, crime stories and psychological dramas.”
S: What was it like filming at the Safe House location?
SP: “It was an amazing house in Anglesey. I’ve never seen anything quite so beautiful, but the house was also scary at the same time. It set the tone for the drama because of how eerie and isolated it was. You didn’t have to pretend about just being a small dot in this environment because you really did feel like that.”
S: Was it haunted?
SP: “There was one room with a strange feeling. I walked in and I said, ‘I feel like someone’s sitting on my chest!’ Apparently, that room’s haunted by a young boy’s spirit, so that was really strange. I’m a bit of a wuss, so I only allowed myself to go into certain rooms and I’d just try to stay as close to other people as possible, especially at night.”
S: Dani has to do without her mobile phone and her computer. How would you cope with that?
SP: “I think I’d struggle. I’d like to think after maybe a week, the withdrawal would go and I’d cope. But your whole life’s on there. Especially for someone like Dani, who’s a teenager. That’s mostly the way people communicate at that age. I’m really bad – I annoyingly spend my free days sometimes just constantly refreshing Twitter and Instagram. I try to give myself days off but I only last so long.”
S: How do you look back on your time at Corrie?
SP: “I feel so fortunate to have been part of it. The relationship between Sophie Webster and my character, Sian Powers, was ground-breaking in many ways.”
