Former Corrie actress Sherrie Hewson has resigned as a panellist on the popular ITV daytime show Loose Women

Sherrie Hewson shocked Loose Women fans today with the announcement that she will be leaving the panel after 14 years on the ITV show.

The actress has been on the British panel show since 2003, a show in which four female panellists discuss their lives and the topical issues of the day, as well as interviewing celebrities.

In an emotional announcement, Sherrie emphasised how important Loose Women is to fans when she said 'there are 1000s of women out there who come up to me every day and say,  'Thank you to all the girls'.

"They relate to one of us always and they don’t necessarily like all of us, but mostly they do and they all say ‘Thank you, we’ve been through what you’ve been through, the loneliness you’ve been through, the bad times, sad times, we all watch you and we go, Oh my god if they can get through it so can I and it’s been incredible.'"

Over the 14 years Sherrie served on the panel, she has been through divorce, hair loss and bankruptcy. She thanked her fellow panellists for helping her through all those difficult times.

The 65-year-old said: "I’ve told as much as I’m sure you all want to hear. So I’m going to be leaving Loose Women because it’s kind of time, I’ve said everything there is... so I’m leaving this seat so somebody else now can sit on this seat for 14 years and tell all their stories."

In an emotional episode fellow panellist Coleen Nolan wiped away a tear and said: “It doesn't matter what panellists come on the show now or in the future, but there will never be another Sherrie.”

Sherrie Hewson found fame as Corrie's Maureen Webster in 1993. In recent years she has returned to acting, starring in Benidorm and she's about to appear in the revival of the classic BBC show Are You Being Served?

Sherrie’s final appearance on Loose Women will be on Monday, September 5.

Loose Women is broadcast weekdays on ITV at 12.30pm.
