Olympic cycling champ, Sir Bradley Wiggins, injures ankle in training for The Jump on Channel 4

Olympic cycling champion Sir Bradley Wiggins has shown off an injury from training on The Jump – but said “the show must go on”.

The retired cyclist is one of the top names taking part in the injury-plagued winter sports competition which begins tonight on Channel 4. He'll be joined on the slopes by a diverse mix of daredevils including double Paralympic gold medallist Kadeena Cox  former Liverpool footballer Robbie Fowler, Big Brother winner Josie Gibson, Olympic gymnast Louis Smith, Made in Chelsea's Spencer Mathews and Emma Parker Bowles, the niece of the Duchess of Cornwall.

Speaking about the show Sir Bradley said, "It's a good show and I've always enjoyed watching it, so I'm pleased to be here."

However the cycling champ has already sustained an injury to his ankle and posted a snap on Instagram of him being bandaged up in Austria where filming takes place.

But he captioned the image “the show must go on”, reassuring fans that he was not about to leave the gruelling and notoriously accident-laden competition.

A source said of his injury: “It’s not threatening his taking part in the show. It’s very minor.”

His Instagram post comes after model Vogue Williams was forced to pull out of this year's show, now in its fourth series and presented by Davina McCall.

Vogue, who injured her knee while training, has been replaced by model and former I'm A Celebrity contestant, Amy Willerton.

Seven celebrities were forced to quit last year’s series because of a spate of accidents, including former Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington, who described her shoulder injury as, "literally the worst thing that's ever happened to me."

Meanwhile Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle fell during training for the show and dislocated her neck and last year  former Holby City actress, Tina Hobley, said she was still struggling with injuries caused by her accident in the 2015 series which resulted in her elbow coming out it's socket, her arm being broken in two places and the mum of three sustaining injuries to her shoulder and knee. Tina said, "For much of the year I haven't been able to drive, dress, wash my hair or have a bath unaided."

Celebrities you've been warned! How will this year's intrepid assortment cope as they put on their skis, slip into their lycra and take to the slopes?

Find out tonight when the new series begins  on Channel 4 at 7.30pm.
