The Voice: Shock as favourite Liam Tamne leaves

There was a shock for fans of The Voice on Saturday night as series favourite Liam Tamne was knocked out at the battle rounds stage.

The West End performer - who has been seen in Les Miserables and Hairspray, among others, had been heavily tipped by the bookies as a potential series champion.

While Danny O'Donoghue said he agreed with 'pulling people out of their comfort zone,' Tom Jones was unconvinced.

"It sounded too high, Liam came across to me as more natural than John did

However will defended his actions, calling the song 'the best for what I needed to see' - and shocked both audience and judges further by choosing John over Liam.

Afterwards a clearly stunned Jessie said, "I really did not expect that at all, Liam is an amazing singer" - while the man himself expressed his own disappointment while choking back tears.

Will, meanwhile, told them: "It's more than just a voice, and going forward into a future career I feel John is the guy."

But his explanation did little to placate Jessie who stormed off the set telling producers: "I just need a moment away from him."

She later returned for the final leg of the battle rounds as the coaches completed their teams.

Others who made it through on Saturday night included Alys Williams, Trevor Francis, Karl Michael, Abi Sampa, Sean Rumsey, Letitia Grant Brown, Joseph Apostol and Moni Tivony.

Lemuel Knights also won himself a place in the next round after Will.i.am used his 'steal' option to give him another chance.

However it wasn't such good news for the likes of Emily Worton, Laura Oakes, Emma Jade Garbutt, Lareena Mitchell and opera duo Diva, who were among those knocked out on Saturday night.

The Voice will move to its next stage next weekend when the current numbers are whittled down to 12 finalists.
