The X Factor: Bye Bye Beverley

Primary school teacher Beverley Trotman has become the latest casualty of The X Factor, losing out in the bottom two to girl group Hope. The 37-year-old was given the boot after the judges reached deadlock on their vote for the first time this series. After both acts had reprised their songs - Beverley singing the classic Without You, and Hope performing the Christina Aguilera hit Hope, mentors Louis and Simon each voted to keep their acts. "Beverley is a class act and deserves to be in the final five," Louis said. Dannii, meanwhile, opted to send home Hope, leaving Sharon with the casting vote - and she chose Beverley. "I'm not sure if people will understand why I've made this decision," she said. As a result, the final outcome fell to the public vote, where it was revealed that Beverley had received the least number of votes from the public. "I feel like I've had a fantastic run," she said afterwards, adding that she "appreciated the opportunity" to have been in the live finals. "Simon has given me a massive opportunity," she told Dermot O'Leary. "I have started the journey. I feel quite excited...this is not the end!" Earlier in the evening, she had received favourable reviews from the judges after opening the love song-themed show. "You were spectacular...I had goose bumps," Sharon told her, while Simon said it would be a "tragedy" if she didn't make it through to the following week's show. Hope, meanwhile, took to the stage amid controversy, following reports they had rejected the song Simon had chosen for them and instead chosen their own - as well as styling themselves. The papers had also reported in-fighting over band member Phoebe Brown performing the lead vocals. Simon said they did well. "It would be a travesty if Hope were to go out on the back of this performance," he told them, although the other judges expressed doubts. "I don't know if we made a mistake not putting Phoebe through in the solo category," she mused. The show also saw praise for Rhydian, who performed Somewhere from the musical West Side Story, and Leon, with his rendition of the Ray Charles hit You Don't Know Me. Both acts reduced mentor Dannii Minogue to tears. "I felt you were singing personally to me," she said of Rhydian's performance, "it was amazing. I honestly can't even speak." Next week's show will see the remaining five acts tackling classic songs by British performers, with a guest appearance from 80s heart-throbs Duran Duran.
