Best TV shows on TV tonight
Casualty, 9 pm, BBC One
Dylan (William Beck) is blown away tonight when his mentor is admitted to the ED in a serious way following a fire at her care home. Dr Jemima Hargrove (Souad Faress) is accused of starting the deadly blaze, but Dylan suspects that she’s the victim of abuse. Can he protect her and get to the truth? Elsewhere, Rash (Neet Mohan) has realised that there’s something seriously wrong with his father, while Paige (Shalisha James-Davis) and Stevie (Elinor Lawless) call an uneasy truce. Expertly stepping between life-and-death drama, comedy (a care-home Casanova has some explaining to do!) and a new medical mystery, Casualty is in rude health as 2023 kicks off in Holby-land. ★★★★ ER
Mystery Road: Origin, 9 pm, BBC Four
After two films and two TV series, the outback crime thriller goes back to the 1990s with this prequel following Jay Swan (Savage River’s Mark Coles Smith) as he returns to his home town as a newly graduated constable. The Western noir atmosphere is there from the off, as Jay picks up a wanderer in the desolate salt flats of Western Australia and walks straight into a hold-up at the roadhouse. As well as the mysteries of a heist gang and a reopened cold case, fans are rewarded with Jay’s family backstory and the moment he first meets love Mary (Tuuli Narkle). Coles Smith shares the swagger and honour of Jay, as originally portrayed by Aaron Pedersen, which make him such a unique detective. ★★★★ NT
Ant & Dec's Limitless Win, 8.30 pm, ITV1

And this time, there’s a special Take Two lifeline involving Ant and Dec, and new music-themed questions. Just make sure you have a cushion to hide behind as the cash prizes get bigger and the stakes get higher… ★★★★ HD
Rod Stewart Night, from 8 pm, BBC Two
It’s incredible to think that Rod Stewart’s career is now into its seventh decade – and he’s still touring! Tonight, BBC2 devotes much of its schedule to the popular singer who at various times has sung folk, R&B, rock, the American Songbook and even, briefly, disco. His unmistakable vocals are showcased in the new Rod Stewart at the BBC 2, which features hits such as Handbags and Gladrags, You're in My Heart and – reportedly a favourite of the late Queen – Sailing. That's followed by a chat to Dermot O'Leary in Reel Stories (9pm), Rod Stewart Live at Hyde Park (9.30pm) and an Imagine documentary (10.35pm) in which Rod looks back on his life and career with Alan Yentob. ★★★★ JP
Best box set on TV tonight
Even if you haven’t seen this drama, chances are you’ve read about it or had someone tell you how good it is – there was certainly a buzz surrounding the show which some have called the best (and possibly most stressful) on TV. Jeremy Allen White plays young chef Carmy, who applies skills honed working in New York’s hottest spot to running a Chicago sandwich shop after his brother dies and leaves it to him. If you’re not shouting ‘Behind!’ every time you squeeze between the fridge and a bemused family member, you soon will be. A second series has already been commissioned – are we a little excited to see what’s next for the staff at The Original Beef of Chicagoland? Yes, chef! ★★★★★ JP
Best film on TV tonight
Sleepless in Seattle, 3.15 pm, Channel 4
This Oscar-nominated romantic comedy written and directed by Nora Ephron celebrates its 30th anniversary this year – and it’s still one of the greatest romcoms ever made. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, who had already co-starred in Joe Versus the Volcano and went on to pair up again in You’ve Got Mail, star, but the plot keeps them apart for most of the movie. He’s struggling to move on after the death of his wife, while she tries to convince herself that she’s happy with her fiancé (Bill Pullman). A perfect Saturday-afternoon film. ★★★★ JP
Live Sport
- PGA: Tournament of Champions, 8.30 pm, Sky Sports Golf
- FA Cup: Sheffield Wednesday vs Newcastle United, 5.40 pm (k-o 6 pm), BBC One, iPlayer
