Best TV shows on TV tonight
Celebrity MasterChef 2023, 9 pm, BBC One
There’s a real TV flavour to this fourth and final heat as popular Strictly Come Dancing pro Dianne Buswell, Emmerdale actors Michael Praed and Amy Walsh, Love Island favourite Luca Bish and Black Eyed Peas star-turned-The Voice of the Philippines judge Apl.de.ap all get a large dose of reality as they enter the Celebrity MasterChef kitchen. They’re keen to impress resident judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace with their cooking skills, but Michael is plunged straight into food hell for the first challenge, Under the Cloche, when he’s greeted by a fishy ingredient he hates. Can he still put in a stellar performance? Continues tomorrow and Friday.

The Yorkshire Vet, 8 pm, Channel 5
This week’s episode should come with an X-rating. First on the list is a C-section on a Belgian Blue heifer, and Shona warns doing this kind of invasive procedure in a dirty barn carries its risks. It’s a first for veterinary student Jordan, who admits all her learning has been in the classroom up until now. Elsewhere, Peter receives a call from Eloise, one of his veterinary nurses, to treat one of her pet alpacas for a nasty eye infection. Upon inspection, he declares the eye to be ‘absolutely useless’ and it will need removing immediately. There’s nothing like the present for a spot of field-hospital surgery…

Bake Off: The Professionals, 8 pm, Channel 4
Vive la Viennoiserie! It’s the quarter-finals, and the five remaining teams have three-and-a-half hours to make 24 savoury puff pastries and three sharing brioche feuilletée (butter, basically). Then it’s a Showpiece on the grand theme of ‘A Life of Amphibians and Reptiles’. As usual, Benoit Blin and Cherish Finden take their selections very seriously indeed.

Secrets of the London Underground, 8 pm, Yesterday
Tim Dunn and Siddy Holloway explore Shepherd’s Bush Station in west London – the original terminus of the Central London Railway, which opened in 1900, and now serving visitors to the largest shopping mall in Europe. Siddy shows Tim a ventilation shaft (a mysterious terrible smell was reported in the station’s early days) which leads to a secret tunnel used as a shelter in World War Two. Tim then heads off to find out about the brilliant project Art on the Underground, and gets a run-through of some of the amazing works to be seen at stations.

Best box set on TV tonight
Harlan Coben's Shelter, Prime Video
In Shelter, Mickey Bolitar survives the car crash that kills his father and puts his mother in hospital. While she recovers from her injuries in rehab, he goes to live with his estranged Aunt Shira (Entourage’s Constance Zimmer) in the quiet suburban town of Kasselton, New Jersey.
Struggling with his grief and trying to fit into his new surroundings, Mickey immediately forms a connection with another new student Ashley Kent (Samantha Bugliaro). But when she disappears before their first date, he is determined to find out what’s happened to her.
NC
Best film on TV tonight
The French Connection, Disney Plus
Along with The Exorcist, this is probably the best-known film by director William Friedkin, who died earlier this month, aged 87. The 1971 crime thriller captures the gritty New York of the time and won five Oscars, including Best Director for Friedkin. The car chase (against an elevated train) in which Gene Hackman’s cop Popeye Doyle relentlessly pursues a villain is a cinema classic.
