Best TV shows on TV tonight

Waterloo Road, 8 pm, BBC One

On the surface, Waterloo Road’s ‘top boy’ Preston (Noah Valentine) seems to have it all – good looks, an amazing girlfriend in Samia (Priyasasha Kumari) and he’s captain of the basketball team. But we now know that perfect Preston is in the grip of a secret battlewith bulimia. Tonight, Preston’s distracted when mum Nicky (Kym Marsh) turns up with cupcakes during an important basketball game… and he has a total meltdown.

Will he ever open up about his problems? Speaking of opening up, Donte (Adam Thomas) attends a support group to help deal with losing Chlo. With angst, humour and lots of high drama, this is shaping up to be a great series!

Bradley and Barney Walsh: Breaking Dad, 9 pm, ITV1

Bradley and Barney Walsh

Barney and Bradley’s latest road trip continues in Latin America, and this week they’re in Nicaragua. It’s a country known for its volcanoes, so surprise, surprise, there are a few volcano-related activities lined up for dad Bradders! After sledging at speed down the side of a volcano, the duo get to see the inside of one as they descend into what is known to locals as ‘the mouth of hell’!

As poor Bradley has a fear of speed as well heights, no doubt he’ll be much happier on terra firma when he teams up with a professional baseball team!

The Traitors US, 8pm, BBC Three

If you’re one of the millions who watched The Traitors on BBC1 or streamed it over the Christmas period, you may be interested in checking out the US version, hosted by Alan Cumming, airing three nights a week on BBC3. The setting is the same Scottish castle as the UK version, and will feature ‘faithfuls’ and ‘traitors’, but the prize fund will be bigger and could rise to a whopping $250,000.

Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild, 9 pm, Channel 5

This week, Ben heads to Uruguay to meet British-born actor Rhona Mitra. Six years ago, she sold her Venice Beach home in California and moved to the wilderness. It takes Ben three hours to reach her by car, travelling north-east from the capital Montevideo. He is excited to meet Rhona, in part because his degree was in Latin American studies, yet this is a country he knows little about.

Rhona’s contrasting lifestyle shocks him. She lives in total isolation, hasn’t had a visitor stay in four years, and manages more than 400 acres of land. Rhona tells Ben her story and how a life dedicated to conservation and rehabilitating abused horses has finally brought her health and contentment.

Ahead of ITVX’s much-anticipated drama Nolly, written by Russell T Davies and featuring Helena Bonham Carter as Crossroads star Noele Gordon, catch up with selected highlights from the famous long-running Midlands soap on ITVX and Britbox. These include various Christmas episodes, the Crossroads motel fire and its aftermath, and Meg’s wedding to Hugh Mortimer, which aired in 1975.

Best film on TV tonight

The Craft: Legacy, 9 pm, Film 4

The Craft Legacy

Another requel (reboot-sequel), this time for the 1996 fantasy about teen witches, but now the girls are fighting for one another rather than among themselves. Cailee Spaeny is the newbie who is instantly eyeballed by Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone and Zoey Luna as the missing part of their coven for their magic to work.

There are some swipes at toxic masculinity and other modern concerns, but this works best as a coming-of age story about fitting in. Although the last 30 minutes feel rushed, the finale swings it all back to the original film in a fitting, satisfying manner.
