Watch Ian McKellen portray Sherlock Holmes at age 93 (VIDEO)

Sir Ian McKellen has treated fans to a sneak peak of his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes.

The Hobbit star has the title role in Mr Holmes, which sees the famous sleuth retired and living in seclusion by the sea with his housekeeper and her young son, who help him attempt to solve his final case.

Sir Ian tweeted: "Exclusive first clip from my new film Mr Holmes. I'm Holmes, age 93, working my final case with a young confidante."

The clip shows the elderly Holmes walking along a cliff top with a young boy, and telling him that he had decided to retire after struggling to remember the details of a case, but is now determined to solve it before he dies.

The film, based on short story A Slight Trick Of The Mind by Mitch Cullin, is directed by Bill Condon who worked with Sir Ian on the Oscar-winning Gods And Monsters.

American actress Laura Linney will play Holmes' housekeeper Mrs Munro, in a cast that also includes Roger Allam, Phil Davis and Sir Ian's Vicious co-star Frances de la Tour.
