Corrie's Chris: 'Tommy feels history's repeating'

Coronation Street's Chris Fountain reveals to Soaplife how Tommy is thrown into turmoil when Tina finds out she's pregnant. How does Tommy feel as Gary, Izzy and the family gather for Tina's pregnancy test? "I think Tommy has shown that the Windass family are not his favourite people. They hijack his life, no matter where he goes. Tommy might find the whole surrogacy a bit easier to cope with if the Windass family gave them some space, but they don't and he finds it overbearing. The pregnancy test should be a private moment, but it's not as everyone is gathered around. He just hates how public it all is." What's Tommy's reaction when the test is negative? "Tommy's absolutely buzzing when the test comes back negative. It means that they have tried, but it hasn't worked and, in Tommy's mind, there may be a chance they will stop trying and ditch the whole idea." But then Tina takes another test and this time it's positive...? "And Tommy's gutted. He now faces the prospect of his girlfriend carrying a baby for someone else. It's going to have a huge impact on Tommy and Tina's life. Apart from the money Tommy and Tina will have nothing to show for it and the sight of Gary and Izzy hugging at the news of the positive test result really makes him feel down. It just knocks the stuffing out of him and he finds it very hard to accept." Does Tommy feel guilty because Tina is doing this to get them out of the financial mess he got them in? "Tommy would have preferred to find the money to cover his debts another way. He feels that history is repeating itself... He loathes the fact that his own dad sold him as a baby and now he feels that he is renting out his girlfriend's womb to one of the neighbours for cash." Will it affect their love life? "Oh, yes. They have a night in together and Tina starts to make amorous advance towards him. At first he responds but he then pulls away and tells her it doesn't feel right to him when she's pregnant with someone else's child." Owen guesses Tommy isn't happy and pays him the second instalment of the surrogacy fee. Does that help? "It does sweeten the bitter pill he has to swallow in accepting this whole situation. But it's certainly not a celebratory moment for Tommy." What are the chances of Tommy and Tina's relationship surviving this? "It would be incredibly sad if they split up over this. They have never had the chance to be carefree and happy together. I don't know how this storyline will play out, but if Tommy wants to keep Tina he can't let his pride get in the way. I would love true love to prevail in the end..."
