Stephanie's sudden Corrie departure forces rewrite

Stephanie Cole has quit Coronation Street - forcing bosses to rewrite parts of Hayley Cropper's cancer storyline.

The 71-year-old actress joined Coronation Street two years ago as Roy Cropper's bossy mother Sylvia Goodwin. She has left at short notice following a bout of ill health.

Julie Hesmondhalgh, who plays Roy's wife Hayley, is set to leave the soap at the end of the year, and her character has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

A Coronation Street spokeswoman confirmed on Twitter that Stephanie has finished filming 'for the time being'.

An insider revealed her character had been due to play a key part in Hayley's exit storyline and the scripts have had to be quickly rewritten to account for Stephanie's exit.

Coronation Street bosses are hoping the actress may return in the future.
