Scott Maslen blames spending cuts on EastEnders woes

EastEnders actor Scott Maslen has hit out at soap bosses, saying that recent spending cuts are affecting the quality of the show.

Speaking to the Daily Star Sunday Scott - whose character Jack Branning is due to leave the show this autumn - said that budget issues had taken their toll on the cast and production team.

"They made big cuts about three years ago and that affected the whole community working on EastEnders," he said.

"It has definitely dipped. Corrie has been getting the attention - and right so. They're doing really, really well."

EastEnders has suffered from falling ratings of late, with Barbara Windsor - who recently made a special appearance as Peggy Mitchell - admitting she had returned to the show in a bid to pull in viewers.

"It’s in a bit of a state, the show, at the moment. It’s not getting there, we’re third, we’ve never been third ever so it needs working on," she told This Morning.

It was revealed earlier this week that several characters are being axed from the show, among them Kirsty Branning, AJ Masood, Carl White and Poppy Meadow.

Jasmyn Banks, who plays Alice Branning, has also announced her departure.
