It's almost 100 years since film producers first thought of putting a stage musical on film. In this 90-minute programme, first shown on More4 in June, Paul O’Grady looks at the history of the movie musical, from its early beginnings in the Roaring Twenties, through the golden age of the genre, to the multi-million-dollar industry of today. There are lots of juicy titbits, too, including how the song Over the Rainbow was very nearly cut from The Wizard of Oz, and what happened between Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando on the set of Guys and Dolls. If this puts you in the mood for more musical marvellousness, the programme is followed at 8.00pm by the Oscar-winning Les Misérables, starring Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.
