Battle-weary US army captain Martin Sheen sets off to track down a renegade US army colonel in Francis Coppola's awesome Vietnam War epic.

The eerie opening sequence, with helicopters swooping over the burning jungle to the sound of Jim Morrison's This Is the End, while Sheen lies restlessly under a throbbing ceiling fan, sets the surreal tone of the movie, brilliantly adapted from Joseph Conrad's classic novella, Heart of Darkness.

Highlights include the crazy Ride of the Valkyries helicopter attack and Sheen's river-boat arrival at the HQ of the colonel (played by Marlon Brando, whose mumbling performance was eventually hailed as one of his best).

Robert Duvall's Colonel Kilgore ('I love the smell of napalm in the morning!') makes a charismatic impact and Dennis Hopper also scores as a photojournalist with a worrying view of Kurtz (‘Sometimes he goes too far - he's the first to admit it!’).

Spot Harrison Ford and Larry Fishburne.
