After enjoying the pleasure-seeking 1920s, the Robshaws find themselves in a strange decade that brings rapid progress, poverty for some and plenty for others – and a sense of creeping dread that comes with their knowledge of the horrors that were soon to befall the world.

At home, there are new electrical kitchen gadgets, a larder full of branded goods – and the return of servant Debbie! The family also gets a taste of the decade’s dieting craze and trendy food like sliced bread, and Brandon is thrilled when Jilly Goolden drops by with a 1933 bottle of wine!
