Director Tim Burton takes the stranger-than-fiction true story of a scandalous art fraud and artist Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) and turns it into an offbeat comedy drama.
Margaret paints sad waifs with huge eyes - and in 1950s and 1960s America the kitsch portraits are hugely popular with the public, while being derided by the critics.
However, it’s naive, browbeaten Margaret’s pushy and increasingly domineering husband Walter (played with smarmy charm by Christoph Waltz) who takes all the credit for the artworks and turns them into a profitable business.
Then Margaret decides to fight back - and a court case ensues…
The stars are ideal and Burton ensures his engaging tale is ravishing to look at. Whether the same can be said of Margaret's art is entirely a matter of taste.
