Gibson's portrayal of Wallace is inspirational, while his handling of the historical story is always absorbing. Patrick McGoohan is also outstanding as the dastardly Edward I and there's subtle work, too, from both Angus Macfadyen, as a weak-willed Robert the Bruce, and Sophie Marceau, as Princess Isabelle.

It takes a while to swing into action but, once it does, the fight scenes are incredibly impressive - and in a comical prelude to one big battle, exactly what a Scotsman wears under his kilt is demonstrated en masse.

A great film, this was nominated for 10 Oscars, winning five, including Best Picture and Best Director.
