The Cavern opened as a jazz venue in 1957 and hosted almost 300 gigs by the Fab Four in their early days, until long stints in Hamburg and back home honed them into the devastating pop machine they became.
But as this documentary fronted by Liverpool lad Paul McGann discovers, there’s more to the place than Merseybeat nostalgia.
For sure, this documentary treads some familiar ground but it’s nevertheless a fascinating story of how the iconic venue has survived its own dramas and changing fortunes to remain at the heart of the music scene for seven decades.
