A sweet, feelgood British comedy starring Luke Newberry and set in 1977 Yorkshire
A sweet, feelgood British comedy starring Luke Newberry and set in 1977 Yorkshire.
Newberry plays geeky 18-year-old misfit Derek 'Dusty' Springfield, a brainy swot at odds with his working-class family. However, when he befriends a neglected greyhound he finds a way to connect with his community - and the girl of his dreams (Genevieve Gaunt).
The period and characters are painted in broad, colourful strokes and the film is nowhere near as fleet-footed as its canine heroine.
However, vivid turns from the likes of Ian Hart (Dusty's grumpy dad), Ben Batt (his boisterous, criminally inclined brother) and Lesley Sharp (long-suffering mum) make this an enjoyably genial romp.
