Tom Cruise puts on an Irish accent and a cloth cap as a young farm labourer in 1892 Ireland, who dreams of owning his own piece of land.

How he meets his landlord's daughter, Nicole Kidman, and what happens to them after they run off together to the US makes up the content of this romantic drama.

It may be gushing and incredibly corny, but it looks spectacular, the climactic Oklahoma land-rush sequence is handled with tremendous verve and it is full of wry humour and telling details about being poor, hungry and ambitious.

Cruise's usual brand of high energy pluck is ideally suited to a plot that sees him at one pivotal point making a living as a bare-knuckle fighter and Kidman also acquits herself ably with a headstrong performance ('I'm running away because I'm modern!').
