Julius Caesar was perhaps the most famous Roman of them all.

After crossing the Rhine and invading Britain, the brilliant general was then proclaimed ‘dictator in perpetuity’ of the new empire before being assassinated on the Ides of March in 44BC.

Most of us know some of that story, but Mary Beard sets out to paint a fuller picture of the man and his legacy, pulling some myths from their pedestals as she goes and asking the question: was his brutal slaying inevitable, or did he bring it on himself?
