Jane Horrocks excels as LV, a painfully shy young woman with the ability to perfectly mimic great singers.

She spends almost her entire time in her room, belting out songs by the likes of Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich and Shirley Bassey.

Meanwhile, her loud-mouthed, blowsy mother (Brenda Blethyn) is having an affair with seedy, small-time showbiz agent Michael Caine - who one night hears Horrocks sing...

Horrocks does all her own vocals and really is sensational, especially when she belts out the Gracie Fields number, Sing As We Go. Caine eventually comes into his own on stage, too, with a barnstorming rendition of Roy Orbison's It's Over. Blethyn's astonishingly rude performance has to be seen and heard to be believed and add Ewan McGregor, as the quiet pigeon fancier who also fancies Horrocks, and this delightful little film is just magical.
