Hilary Swank plays a despairing young widow in New York

Hilary Swank plays a despairing young widow in New York.

Then she discovers that her Irish late husband (Gerard Butler) has left her 10 messages to help her start a new life, including a trip to his homeland.

This glossy version of Cecelia Ahern's bestseller has made a peculiar transformation to the screen, replacing the book's down-to-earth warmth with a thick veneer of American schmaltz.

Still, Swank does pretty well and she has a sterling backup cast - including Lisa Kudrow, Gina Gershon and Harry Connick Jr - to fill the script's empty spaces.

It's an unabashed chick flick but, as such, it's sweet natured, amusing, poignant and good hearted.
