Tom Cruise learns the bulk of his father's $3million estate has been left to an autistic elder brother (Dustin Hoffman).

Spiriting Hoffman away from the institution where he lives, Cruise hopes to start a custody battle to get his hands on the inheritance, but then his attitude begins to change.

Director Barry Levinson's gentle comedy drama, built around Cruise and Hoffman's odd-couple clash, motors on its star chemistry and it's never mawkish.

Cruise shouts and swaggers, while Hoffman is utterly convincing. The four-Oscar-winning result (Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director and Best Actor for Hoffman), as they move through rugged landscapes, Las Vegas gambling and roadside crises, is moving, compelling and very funny.

This film starts at 11.55pm on BBC1 Wales.
