He came to power full of promises about transforming the lives of the poor.

But 20 years on, Venezuela is in the midst of a crisis, with 90 per cent of families saying they do not have enough to eat.

Chávez was hailed as a new hope for socialism, and in the short term made some reforms to health and education.
