Simon’s journey across this vast country has taken place during the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, when the ruling Tsar was executed.

Yet nowhere in Russia, not even in St Petersburg, where Simon ends his journey, is anyone celebrating this huge historical moment.

Is it, Simon wonders, because current leader Putin is a bit too Tsar-like and doesn’t want to remind anyone of what happened to the ruling elite 100 years ago?

On his journey Simon’s seen vast differences between rich and poor, massive corruption, a bullying secret police and an increase in global tension, but also stunning scenery and a welcoming and proud nation – it’s been quite a ride.

Showing at 11.15pm in Wales.
