Shallow Hal

With that trademarked little boy's grin working overtime, Jack Black excels as sexist, laddish Hal who is hypnotised by a self-help guru into seeing only people's inner beauty

With that trademarked little boy's grin working overtime, Jack Black excels as sexist, laddish Hal who is hypnotised by a self-help guru into seeing only people's inner beauty.

So, when the obese Rosemary (Gwyneth Paltrow) comes into his life, Black sees a slim stunner and is smitten.

Written, directed and produced by the masters of gross-out comedy, the Farrelly Brothers, the plot is tasteless, but the film balances its hefty number of visual and verbal gags with poignant observations on the meaning of love.

The two charismatic stars bring an immense charm to their relationship and are well supported by Jason Alexander, as Hal’s even shallower pal, and Joe Viterelli as Rosemary’s dad.
