Bruce Willis is a troubled psychologist haunted by his failure to save a patient.

So, when sad little Haley Joel Osment claims 'I see dead people', he is desperate to get to the bottom of the boy's troubles.

Writer-director M Night Shyamalan (who has a cameo appearance as a doctor) subtly manipulates his audience through mood and atmosphere rather than blood and gore, although there are a few truly hair-raising shocks in store.

The famous twist ending is the making of this intelligent horror movie, but it is the affecting performances from Willis and Osment that keep you glued to the screen. Toni Collette, as Osment’s mum, and Olivia Williams, as Willis’ wife, also make their roles count.

Nominated for six Oscars, it lost in all categories, but it was a huge box office hit.
