The show's host, Anil Kapoor, and the police refuse to believe that a slum kid can possibly be bright enough to answer the questions but, gradually, Patel reveals just how and why he's arrived at this point and what it's got to do with his love for Freida Pinto.
A truly astounding film, directed with real skill by Danny Boyle, this pulsates with energy and is surprisingly gritty, too, with a violent torture scene and the hardship of the lad's early days in the Mumbai slums.
However, at heart this eight Oscar-winner is a feelgood romance and it's impossible not to be caught up by its vibrant energy and sheer brilliance.
