Oscar-winning Julianne Moore is remarkable as a linguistics professor with early-onset Alzheimer's.

And her performance is all the better for being so subtle and unshowy.

The first sign that Moore's 50-year-old Alice has the disease is a tiny conversational slip at a party with her husband (Alec Baldwin) and grown-up children (Kate Bosworth, Hunter Parrish and Kristen Stewart).

Then the disease takes hold, gradually stripping her of the skills and memories that make her who she is.

So much so, that when, late in the film, Alice comes upon a video she made while in the early stages, the contrast is both shocking and heartbreaking.
