In 1899, a young medical graduate (Jim Sturgess) arrives at the remote Scottish asylum of the title.

It's run by revolutionary doctor Ben Kingsley and Sturgess soon falls for enigmatic patient Kate Beckinsale.

But nothing is quite what it seems in this intriguing psychological thriller loosely based on a short story by Edgar Allen Poe.

The ripe performances by Kingsley and fellow screen veteran Michael Caine won't be to everyone's taste, but there are some fine ideas going on here and the film's late-Victorian period feel is delicious.
